Hampstead’s Spaniards Inn
London may have the Shard and the London Eye but it also has the Spaniards Road, a continuation of Hampstead Lane that crawls around the west side of Hampstead Heath. At the point where the two roads meet, there is only enough room for one car to get through. It’s a reminder of London’s past and a reminder of why living in London is often a hassle; a lot of people in a confined space.
The inn has a fine historical legacy, dating back to the 16th century. Highwayman Dick Turpin was reported to be a regular and you can find it referenced in Charles Dickens’ The Pickwick Papers and Bram Stoker’s Dracula. In its current incarnation, it aims to be a hybrid of accessible country pub combined with high-end cuisine. The first part is achieved with sturdy wood interiors and a fireplace, to help in escaping from the cold snap that looks like lasting until May.
The examination of the second part started off with the crispy slow-cooked lamb breast, baby leeks, anchovy and vinaigrette. The time it takes to prepare the lamb was rewarded in exquisitely tender meat, which combined well with the vinaigrette, which had just the right amount of acidity to accentuate the lamb’s flavour.
The main course of 28-day dry aged rib eye steak, béarnaise, bone marrow and chips was very pleasing although it would have been improved by the addition of some vegetables, which you have to order separately. The quality of the meat was not in question and it was really possible to see how well the meat has been treated before being cooked. This was just a wish to see the course more fully rounded.
The Spaniards Inn is well stocked with ales and also boasts an extensive wine list. A bottle of Chateau de Carmarsac neatly complimented the beef with its plummy tones and earthy texture.
The meal was finished off with an interesting twist on a British classic. The brandy bread and butter pudding along with buttermilk ice cream was delightful, creamy and very rich.
The Spaniards Inn is a place that will be enjoyable to visit at any time of the year. If there is ever any sun, its gardens will be a wonderful place to pass the time. But right now with these sub-zero temperatures and rain swishing around, it might be time to duck in and huddle round the fire.
