Miss Q’s at Earls Court
There are two things that I excel at after having a few drinks: pulling off an excellent Mick Jagger impression and shooting pool.
Such is my swagger after a modest amount of intoxication that I can get a little competitive when taking on challengers who think they’ve got a chance against this hip-swinging, sharp-shooting, eagle-eyed maverick. However, this tendency of mine did get me into a little spot of trouble whilst at Miss Q’s launch party, a new music venue combined with pool tables and American food.
After dominating the table for some time, I was taken aside by the sister of the owner of the establishment and told that there was a journalist from Hello magazine who wanted to play. Not only this but it was important that I let her win. I was now in quite a quandry. What to do? Do the easy thing and throw the game? Or instead, impose another crushing defeat on a person who had probably had to spend all day in a carefully staged photoshoot featuring a premiership footballer recently caught in a gay bar? Well reader, I’m not sorry to say that I whooped her sorry arse.
But enough about my socially inept dealings with reasonable and easily-upset people. The venue itself is plush and well-ordered. But then that’s the sort of thing you would expect from a place designed by the Paul Daly design studio. For years, the name has been a byword for understated cool. Here, they have struck a great balance in keeping aspects of Americana without trying to sell it too hard.
Up on stage was an Elvis impersonator, rather different to the sets from DJs and up-and-coming music acts. But to hear the King knock out Come As You Are is a treat that no one should ever go without.
The menu is stocked up with classic American food and is reasonably priced. If you’re staying for a full meal, expect to spend around £10-£20 per person, which is good value for money considering what you’re getting in terms of portions.
There is one issue of there only being enough room for three pool tables which means that queues do build up quite quickly. Especially if there is some fired-up pool machine hogging the table. And the addition of Persian rugs underneath the tables does seem a little out of place. It’s a quaint touch although I did notice a few people knocking up the corners and having to come back and turn them back over.
