Lonely Planet’s Street Food Festival
If you’ve ever decided to venture abroad and have looked to do some research before you go, it’s more than likely that you’ve reached for a copy of Lonely Planet. Of course, it is possible that you eschew such bourgeois indulgences and go in search of the ‘real’ India/Thailand/Plaistow. Good for you and good luck on cultivating that beard to the same proportions as the person you chose to copy.
Although the internet has diluted some of Lonely Planet‘s authority with anyone and everyone now able to tell you where to find the hidden treasures of a city or country, Lonely Planet retains a large knowledge resource and a commitment to ensuring that travellers are able to travel with some forewarning about what to expect.
The latest addition to Lonely Planet‘s list of publications is The World’s Best Street Food. This book tells where to get the best street food on the planet. But you don’t have to go reaching for your passport in order to get a sample. Not only does the book tell you how to go about making the dishes yourself but they are also holding an event here in London, bringing together food from many different countries including Spain, Japan and India.
Taking in the food found at bazaars, hawker centres (open-air complexes found in Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore that specialise in cooking and selling cheap food) and markets, there is a wealth of culinary creations to be found in the book and the Lonely Planet Street Food Festival taking place next week.
Running for two days from Wednesday to Thursday, 28-29 March, at the indoor setting of The Village Underground in Shoreditch, there will be a whole host of entertainment and music representing each of the countries with stalls at the festival. Tickets cost £10 with three samples of food included in the price.
