Dazed Live 2011

As if being one of our favourite independent magazines, showcasing the best in cutting edge art, music, film, fashion and cultural shenanigans wasn’t enough, Dazed and Confused are extending their influence on the London cultural sphere even further with Dazed Live – their first ever live festival, taking place throughout Shoreditch on Saturday 9 April.

Always the trendsetter, Dazed Live is getting the city festival season started early featuring inspiring artists, musicians and some of the greatest thinkers of our Dazed generation. The festival kicks off with a series of talks by guest speakers and inspiring under-35 creatives who embody the Dazed and Confused ethos in their work, reacting to the ever-increasing dominance of all things digital in our society.

Highlights include globally-exhibited media artist Aaron Koblin, creative director of the Data Arts Team at Google’s Lab and American author Daniel Pinchbeck, whose book Breaking Open The Head, an exploration of shamanism and all things psychedelic, has cemented his reputation as an icon of New York counterculture. There will also be a premiere screening of Pinchbeck’s film, Time For Change at Shoreditch Church.

The Dazed Lab talks, taking place at The Tramshed, let you witness first-hand creative cogs in motion. The wide variety of topics means that you will be able to see such people as Paul Pieroni, co-curator of Seventeen Gallery, discussing ‘The Retro Future of Art’, architectural pioneer Magnus Larson talking about ‘Architecture Beyond Biomimicry’ while artist Jamie Shovlin meets with author Ned Beauman to tackle to subject of ‘Art and Literature: Faking the Past, The Present, The Future’.

Upstairs at XOYO, design collective Hudson-Powell will be exhibiting some of their latest works while Kathy Grayson’s Postermat exhibition can be seen at 18 Hewett Street. Later, you can enjoy an exclusive series of intimate acoustic sessions and Q&As at Levi’s Craft of Music, featuring sets from Aidan Moffat, founding member of Arab Strap, London band Fiction and Austra, the much-hyped Canadian electro group showcasing the haunting vocal stylings of Katie Stelmanis.

The same venue will also be screening a series of art films including Captured, a documentary film by Daniel B Levin, Ben Solomon and Jenner Furst, as well as the intriguingly-titled Penetration Now.

By night, the usual Shoreditch haunts will be offering an extra special evening of entertainment with Greco-Roman vs Numbers downstairs at XOYO until 2am, featuring DJ sets by Caribou and Actress. At Village Underground, expect only the most cutting edge emerging artists with live performances and DJ sets from the likes of Gang Gang Dance, Black Devil Disco Club, DarkStar, Factory Floor and AboutGroup.

A veritable explosion of all the things that have made Dazed and Confused one of the UK’s most forward thinking independent magazine, Dazed Live promises to combine the best artists, musicians, film-makers and thinkers with just the right amount of East London pretension for a whole day of inspiration, rebellion and dancing. Don’t forget the dancing.

Dazed Live takes place on Saturday 9 April 2011 at various venues throughout Shoreditch, East London.

Tickets for Dazed Live are £25 in advance or £30 on the day and can be bought from the dazedlive website.
