Avalon in Shoreditch

It’s pretty established that London is a cool city. Whether it be the bars, the music or the people, London is one of the global epicentres of cool.

But to define London as cool is problematic and is caught up in the issue of London being a large sprawl with many different parts to it, each with their own particular identity. You can’t really distill London’s cool as a city but you can identity parts of it and how they all link together to produce an overall sense of cool.

For instance, South Kensington cool is sleek and fabulous. Soho cool is ragged and slightly sleazy while Ladbroke Grove cool is founded on a bohemian and laid-back charm.

Shoreditch cool, however, is a lot harder to define given that the area’s whole identity is based on being a mecca of chic. This can be a little irritating at times as it is easy to pick up the impression that everyone is trying that bit too hard, with the general population adhering to the orthodox non-orthodoxy. Thank heavens then for Avalon, the new bar on Shoreditch High Street, for bringing a little sophisticated charm to the area.

Almost everything in Avalon differs from what you might expect from a venue in Shoreditch. The interior is a move away from the minimalism of neighbouring places such as Juno and provides a West End feel with neatly set-out bars, seated areas and a dance floor which doubles as a space for putting on live music. What is enjoyable about the venue is that the layout allows you to cultivate a small space for yourself and your attending company before being able to slip back into the whirl of activity.

Avalon is also able to boast some pretty nifty cocktails such as the Karma Sip-tra and the Cherry Blossom. Yet the most intriguing aspect of the venue is that underneath the bars, the live music and the beer garden is a further level to be explored – a spa featuring a jacuzzi, a sauna and treatment rooms. Although it is unclear how this fits together with upstairs, it does send a message that this venue is more than just a place to enjoy a drink and a dance. It is a statement that Avalon is a venue at which to indulge yourself and in a rather splendid fashion. And who can say no to a little bit of sophistication?
