‘A Soirée in a Cemetery’
The worst thing that can happen to any kind of performer is that they die on stage, that they get no response, not even a declamatory boo or hiss. This generally happens to comedians but can happen to any kind of act in front of an audience. Fortunately for those appearing at A Soirée in a Cemetery, an event put on by Adamotions and Pull The Other One, dying will be part of the event.
Hosted in a secret Victorian cemetery, the night will feature Nigel of Bermondsey who mixes music and storytelling. Also appearing will be The British Humanist Choir. Their repertoire includes cover songs and originals and they are a choir for anyone who wishes to sing non-religious music. They have been featured on BBC Radio 3 and have appeared at venues all around
Also on the bill is Henry Maynard who is co-director of Flabbergast Theatre as well as the co-creator of Boris & Sergey. He will be using both puppetry and shadow puppetry as well as the parameters of the unusual space to tell bizarre and terrifying stories.
The name on the bill that many will recognise is Stewart Lee who has developed a unique presence within the British comedy scene. Frequently frustrating, forever inventive and often brilliantly incisive, Lee is capable of producing comedy like no other performer. He is known for his willingness to embrace awkwardness and to use silences and pauses as part of his sets. He has been performing comedy for over a quarter of a century. So, he’ll have no problems dealing with audiences who just don’t get him. Just because, you know, some of those present will be dead.
For those of you unable to make it or just don’t want to chance the dead coming back to life, head to the Leicester Square Theatre where you can catch the superbly obnoxious Marcel Lucont. He mixes poetry, chansons and pithy dismissals of the audience with a fine sneer of the lip. Fresh from his appearances on Live at the Electric (BBC3), he delivers comedy with poise, elan and a certain je ne sais quoi.
