Designer Spotlight: Rachel Entwistle
So there’s been a lot of silly jewellery floating around lately. It was actually the recent Made in Chelsea ‘Nose Ring Showdown’ that got me thinking about it all. From the moment Lucy uttered those infamous words (‘Your nose ring looks really weird’) it was apparent that opinion was divided over Phoebe’s slightly over the top, Bollywood-themed nose attire.
It’s not all about the nose though. How about those midi rings? A ring so small and precarious that it hovers awkwardly between knuckle and nail bed, refusing to commit fully to one’s finger. On a personal level, having fairly sizeable hands anyway, these little critters would only serve to emphasise the freakish length of my fingers. But (personal aesthetics aside) how is one meant to function in everyday life with small loops of metal jangling around one’s upper fingers?
So it was that I was ruminating on the subject. However, I was stopped in my slightly smug, critical tracks by coming across a jewellery designer who was doing the very opposite to silly. In fact she even made me change my mind about midi rings. The clever lady in question is Rachel Entwistle; designer extraordinaire and co-owner of Thor & Wistle jewellery boutique in Shoreditch.
Until now, never have I stumbled across a collection and wanted every single piece. Even in the best collections, there’s always those few reassuring pieces that you don’t like so much, guiding you towards the ones you do. Not with Rachel Entwistle. I can safely say I would sprinkle her Milagros collection all over my person and keep it on forever.
Spindle-thin gothic cross rings, delicate silver bone bracelets and chains, mystical, ethereal symbols reworked as pendants and midi rings (see, told you I was a convert) all inspired by the British wilds and matters of spirituality. Everything can be layered and stacked, perfect for people like me who like to wear basically the same special pieces every day but with little variations.
Entwistle was nominated last year for New Designer of the Year at the UK Jewellery Awards and her boutique has been nominated for Boutique Retailer of the Year. So she’s no secret anymore. I don’t know about you, but I’m jumping on the bandwagon before it gets too crowded. I’ll be the one wearing an elaborate nose chain and ten midi rings.
