The Lingerie Dress

If there’s one trend that we’re seeing everywhere this autumn/winter it’s the lingerie dress. The idea of wearing underwear as outerwear is one that has been around for years, and be it a peekaboo bra through a sheer shirt or a lace leotard, this trend always comes back around.  The negligee dress however, is a new contender in the lingerie game. But beware; there is a fine line between an edgy, understated look and a Pretty Woman/prostitute undertones moment. And  we don’t want one of those.

Louis Vuitton was the main perpetrator of the lingerie dress trend on the AW13 catwalks with an array of lace-trimmed slip dresses, and Victoria Beckham was one of the first to nail the look, confirming its elegance on the cover of Vogue Australia.

With any catwalk trend, the high street shops are falling over themselves mirroring what we saw on the runway and have succeeded in recreating some rather good and very affordable versions.

As is often the case, Zara is leading the way and the stand out-from the collection has to be the navy and black checked wool midi with asymmetric side split and lace detailing at £109 (on the more expensive side for Zara). More affordable ones start at just £19.99. Perfect if you want to trial the trend before investing in the high-end version.

The Zara dresses give a definite nod to the grungy aesthetic of Yves Saint Laurent, and are not the only high street brand to do so.  H&M has also taken note, and have some incredible oversized jackets that could provide the perfect cover up to a slip dress for a subtler look.

So, the lingerie dress is the basis for an outfit that oozes seduction and doesn’t make a dent in your purse. It’s a keeper.
