Diamond Cut Anyone?
I was first introduced to Michael Van Clarke when I saw his 3 More Inches products. Yes you read right…it’s a hair treatment (pre-wash, shampoo and conditioner) that uses cashmere proteins, which closely match the molecular structure of human hair to help it grow.
After seeing the incredible results for myself I looked further into Michael, an obvious hair genius and would you believe it found that he has a salon just around the corner from my office near Marylebone. It must be fate!
Within minutes I was on the phone booking myself in for what they call a ‘Diamond Cut.’ My locks had grown such a lot and it was time to treat them to an ultra plush haircut.
You may be wondering what a diamond cut is…well it’s a cut where the stylist works on dry hair so your natural texture and movement can be incorporated into the cut.
Leigh, my stylist and also a partner of the salon, explained that the diamond refers to the sectioning pattern. The hair is divided into four quarters, the lines going from the crown to the point at the top of the ear. The method is all based on geometry, because the only way to divide up a sphere properly is with diamonds and triangles – who ever thought hairdressing could be related so closely to mathematics?
As you can imagine I was quite sceptical when they washed and blowed my hair before cutting it, but the results speak for themselves. Doing it this way around allowed Leigh to see how my hair behaves (it doesn’t!) and to sculpt and personalise a new style with precision that is impossible when the hair is wet and sticking to my face.
There are no style-books or blueprint patterns at the salon; instead Leigh took into account my individual idiosyncrasies, such as my uneven density, irregular texture and unique hairline, to create a natural 3-D shape personalised just for me. I must admit I am very pleased. No more wet cuts for me!
