The Ultimate Detox
With the indulgent party season but a foggy memory and European summertime officially beginning in less than eight weeks, ‘tis certainly the season for a spot of internal spring cleaning. But what is detoxing all about, and where can one go to revitalise in peace and quiet?
‘Detoxing is not just about weight loss, it’s a new clarity,’ says Sabine Savisalo-Schuh, founder of The Ultimate Detox. ‘We carry a lot of emotional waste with us. This is part of the body’s healing process.’
Located just two hours from London at New Park Manor in the heart of the protected New Forest, The Ultimate Detox is a 10-day programme based on Dr Otto Buchinger’s early 20th-century method of combining fasting, exercise and rest. Sabine occupies the grand 17th century hotel for the programme’s entirety on fixed dates throughout the year so that her guests can truly experience respite from the stresses of modern life.
‘For the first two days we prepare the body for the six-day fasting period. This includes an alkaline diet such as potatoes and fruit. In the morning and evening there are choices of vegetable broth and porridge. Later we have buttermilk which helps to eliminate toxins. We offer yoga and aqua gymnastics, and at 10am we go Nordic walking for half the day. Dinner is followed by meditation.’
Austrian-born Sabine first became passionate about fasting when she completed a guided course in 2004 and had ‘great results with amazing support. I felt revitalised and lost almost a stone. I started doing it twice a year, in the spring and autumn.’
When she relocated to the UK in 2008 – from running a hotel in the Alps – she noticed a conspicuous gap in the market. ‘Detoxing is so trendy in Austria and Finland, but I couldn’t find anything in England. So I decided to start up my own detox treatments to educate people about the toxins in the food industry.’
New Park Manor is the perfect haven for cleansing the mind, body and soul. Set in the beautiful Hampshire countryside, surrounded by forests and parkland, it’s not unusual to spot roaming horses and deer from the luxurious outdoor Canadian hot tub. The indoor spa boasts stunning panoramic views of the vast grounds, and it is here that you can enjoy a sauna, Sanarium, Turkish steam or Kneipp foot spa, as well as a number of holistic treatments.
I can personally recommend The Ultimate Detox signature herb and hay massage: a soothing and detoxifying therapy ‘utilising muslin compresses filled with detoxifying hay and herbs combined with fragrant warmth-inducing oils’. The idea is that the warmed compresses massage the meridian and pressure points to heat the skin, aid lymphatic drainage and alleviate areas of tension. A truly heavenly experience.
The spring 2010 Ultimate Detox courses take place March 16 to 25 and April 13 to 22.
