Sporting Plaid

Checks have always been around as far as autumnal fashion is concerned. But this year the ante has been well and truly upped. Tartan, plaid and  checks are just about everywhere. But so as not to look like you’ve gone on a crazed shopping rampage in Gretna Green, it’s best to pick your pieces wisely.

Keep shapes simple and clean, picking styles where the print has no competition and can stand out as the main feature; no fuss or frills. One of my favourites is the simple shift tee with baggy sleeves and a high, round neck. Try this one from Camden-born Red or Dead now selling an exclusive collection at Bank. Another great, uncomplicated style to carry tartan is the bomber jacket and this one from Zara is just ideal for wearing with black skinny jeans and loafers.

If skirts are more your thing then try this plaid Mango number with a baggy knit or crisp white shirt buttoned up and tucked in with some bold silver jewellery. If you want a slice of affordable tartan look no further than new online treasure trove Missbehaver.com for a skater skirt affair perfect with a plain black tee and leather jacket for only £15.99.

For a real London twist on checks, Bundy & Webster have teamed up with Check Me Out, to create one-off tartan patterns to capture particular places and people. The range includes bespoke checks for London, Soho, Hackney and Brixton – all created using iconic images from each including colours from the underground map and inspiration from iconic places and characters in each area. So even if you’re lacking in Scottish blood you can still proudly sport your own London plaid! Very nice.
