Style Spotlight: Giles Deacon x QVC

I must admit I was slightly dubious on hearing London designer Giles Deacon had teamed up with QVC on a jewellery range. After all, QVC stands for Quality, Value. Convenience. Aside from the quality, these aren’t necessarily the corner stones of Giles’ design past. I mean that’s more Kris Kardashian territory than Giles? Nicole Richie, Lisa Snowdon, Jennifer Hudson. The back catalogue of celebrity pairings is varied and slightly dodgy. But Giles? Award-winning, Central Saint Martins graduate, ex-Gucci Giles? I like Giles.

So it was with trepidation that I investigated the 15 pieces contained within the Libertine collection. I’m divided.  I like the claw styles and thorn hoop earrings and the beetle motif is cool. A crystal scorpion never goes amiss and I like the knot detailing and different textures woven into pieces that wouldn’t look out of place in Topshop. The prices certainly would though, and at £63 for a base metal bracelet with ‘gold tone’ you’re definitely paying for the Giles name.

The ‘character’ designs with slightly bizarre colourful women adorning gold chains are a little too Claires Accessories, as are the heart designs, but perfect for a gift for teens wanting to buy into a bit of Giles cool.

Don’t get me wrong I’m all for making designer names more affordable and I think prices are becoming increasingly ridiculous as far as designer jewellery goes. But at the same time there’s a fine line between making pieces accessible financially and ‘dumbing down’ the design aesthetic. I think the Libertine Collection has elements that fall either side of the line but there’s enough on the right side to let it slip. But we’ll be watching you, Giles.

Take a closer look at the collection and see what you think at QVC.
