Palm Reading with Amber Garnet
As a general rule, my past experiences with psychics haven’t really been much to write home about. First there was the woman on Brighton Beach who sounded like Pat Butcher and spat out her chewing gum half way through the reading. Then there was the gypsy in the glittery shawl in Venice who told me I’d marry the guy who I was with at the time and have lots of blonde children. Noting the look of horror on my face she added ‘and you will be rich’.
Five years on, I am neither rich nor married to said (ex) boyfriend. While the latter can only be described as a good thing, it’s safe to say that on this subject, I’m up there with the worst of the cynics. Which is why my visit to Amber Garnet took me so much by surprise.
Based upstairs at the Old China Hand in Clerkenwell, Amber looks and acts nothing like the clichéd psychic or palm reader. She’s young, friendly and instantly put me at ease. She explained that the session would consist of palm reading, tarot, and then finish with some reiki – a form of alternative medicine that transfers healing energy through the palms. All sessions are recorded and then posted to you on a CD, so you can listen through again at your leisure.
I was fascinated by the palm reading in particular. Amber not only does readings but also teaches palmistry and writes extensively on the subject, so you really are in the hands of an expert, if you’ll excuse the pun. Analysing the lines and marks on my hand Amber proceeded to talk me through what they meant for me in terms of personality, strengths, weaknesses and important life stages. It was a disconcertingly personal experience, and without going into detail, I will say I was shocked by the level of accuracy and detail. I had deliberately given her nothing more than my name, and she picked up on flaws, past experiences and fears that people who have known me for years would struggle to identify.
At the end of my reading, Amber commented that I seemed very calm – apparently it’s quite normal to find yourself feeling highly emotional or even tearful at the end of a session. I felt quite the opposite, as if a weight had been lifted and everything seemed a lot clearer than before. The cynic in me could say that this is nothing more than a placebo effect, but on this occasion, I think the cynic may be wrong. Sure, there are plenty of psychics out there who’ll tell you exactly what you want to hear in exchange for a few quid. But I think this one’s the real deal.
One of the many glowing reviews on her website describes a visit to Amber as ‘like spending time with an old friend’ – I can’t really think of a better description than that. Hardened cynics, go in with an open mind and prepare to have your preconceptions well and truly challenged.
