Psychic Sundays at Profile
Perfectly in keeping with Soho’s cosmo-centric scene is this diner, bar, café – the three combined: Profile.
With its décor something in between Selfridges’ and Marmite’s colours, the first thing that struck me about this place was how busy it was; a hive of activity on an otherwise quiet and sub zero Sunday evening. Whether this was due to it being the first Psychic Sunday, I was about to find out.
I sat digesting the menu: it had quite a fast food feel to it. Not a bad thing, but noticeable. Organic fast food though, also noted.
With Gavin and Stacey’s Nessa my benchmark for all things psychic related, I had little to no expectation but was excited all the same. Would the person I was on a date with be ‘the one’? Was a new job on the horizon? Could he tell me what my second favourite JLS song was (trick question as I don’t have a first favourite)? So many questions…
10 minutes later…after Profile’s very own Ron Burgundy (the similarity was uncanny) had casually shuffled some cards and picked out the ones he liked the look of, I was told I wouldn’t get divorced and very soon I’d be prosperously working abroad. Oh, and did I have any questions?
The method was authentic at best, but the outcome was brilliant in comparison.
Back at my table, food and cocktail waiting, my psychic reading provided plenty of food for thought. Conversation intermingled with the dangerously gnawable spare ribs and feather-weighted onion rings which were dipped in a Hoisin-tasting BBQ sauce. Wash that all down with a ginger-tickling citrus honey cocktail and thus I had no complaints.
Mains followed suit – great but big. Pleasingly, broccoli accompanied my steak – with a portion of (could have been crisper) chips. The burgers were ‘king’ impressive, but perhaps a little too much? Not a criticism, more a warning.
And to finish, we crammed in some obviously naughty NY cheesecake, elegantly presented with strawberry slices and a pot of melted chocolate. Yum.
My verdict would be: go there on a Sunday because it’s a cool place to wrap up your weekend, but not just for its psychic readings – sorry Ron. Order a mint or a pepperberry cocktail each, share the appetizer combo and you are laughing. Oh, and they give you proper napkins, not paper ones – a real plus that is.
