Breathe Easy at Dorchester Spa

The winter months have played havoc with my chest and sinuses, so an aromatherapy ‘breathe easy’ treatment seemed just the thing to sort me out.

Blocked up to the max, wheezing , coughing and sniffley, I hobbled into the Dorchester spa looking massively out of place. This spa, if you don’t know, is well posh.

For all treatments you must arrive 15 minutes early so you can strip off in the plush changing rooms, put your belongings in the gold gilt and pearl inlay lockers, put on one of the silky soft towelling robes and sexy white slippers, and potter into a white sofa area where your therapist goes through your various complaints, aches and pains with you, before walking you down white curtained corridors to your treatment room: a sublime, quiet space with a huge, comfy bed.

As I lay face down, covered by a warmed towel, my therapist placed a hot bowl of water infused with cleansing eucalyptus and tea tree below me, and asked me to breathe deeply, inhaling the exotic goodness, while she began to rub my back.

The treatment started off gently, but increasingly the massage got stronger, and I could really feel her pushing my muscles and breaking up the congestion in my lungs and chest. When she moved up to massage my scalp and neck with lavender and pine oils I physically felt my body open up, and a quiet clearing settle in my head.

The combination of pressure points and aromatherapy inhalation is designed to fortify and cleanse your upper body, and open up your airways so you can breathe deeply. It can be used to treat chest complaints, colds or even the effects of seasonal allergies. It’s even good for anyone who spends too much time in polluted or stuffy environments – such as the office.

After my treatment I was led to a warm lounge area, to relax on a chaise longue while drinking lychee juice and reading a magazine. This is vital as it ensure the oils are really absorbed into your system; and gives you time to relax before hitting the London streets again.

The treatment lasts for 55 minutes and costs £110.
