TLSee Afternoon Tea at Swissôtel

Last week I had London’s landmarks in the palm of my hand. Big Ben tasted delicious when split down the middle and nibbled. And the crown jewels were a scrummy delight.

I’m talking about a new afternoon tea launched at Swissôtel The Howard where executive chef Brian Spark has designed a plate of miniature chocolates and biscuits, all in the shape of the London icons spotted from the amazing balcony views of this five star hotel.

We were greeted by cocktails – I had a black tea martini which had a lovely marshmallow taste, although someone had been a bit heavy-handed with the daquiri in the Earl Grey cocktail. The teas, which were served at tiny glass tables in the luxury Mauve Lounge, came with a baby strawberry smoothie. You can also get a glass of champers included in the £28 price tag.

London cabs, post boxes and St Paul’s Cathedral were among the nine novelty delights. Big Ben was filled with raspberry ganache. There was also a London bus in white chocolate rather than red – they didn’t want to exacerbate any sugar rush with added E-numbers.

My favourite was the crown in almond shortbread decorated with gold leaf. And the little cheekies came with the old-fashioned afternoon cakes, homemade scones and traditional finger sandwiches.

My only complaint is that the cake stand didn’t twizz around which made it harder for me to reach the macaroons. And I really think there should have been a Thames cruiser – plentiful on the river – seeing as the hotel overlooks such a splendid waterway.

However calling it TLSEE (Tea, London & Sightseeing) ain’t that witty really, but what a pleasant and civilised way to spend an autumn afternoon before walking into London’s real-life platter.
