Another Kind of Silence – Now Touring London
Hailed as a pioneer, criticised as communist and scorned at as a woman, Rachel Carson did not have it easy. Yet her perseverance and commitment to drawing attention to the importance of our natural environment has had an enduring impact.
So…who exactly is Rachel Carson?
An American biologist, environmentalist and writer in the 1950s and ‘60s, Carson was passionate about exploring nature and wildlife. Through this infatuation she became committed to writing about the misuse of chemical pesticides such as DDT, and the devastating effects that they were having on environments and communities.
Her 1962 book Silent Spring has been a catalyst in changing people’s views of the relationship between chemicals versus nature, and our apparent disregard thereof.
Another Kind of Silence is a one woman show currently touring London which sees actress Liz Rothschild take on the persona of Carson, bringing her character to life through a controlled, informative and chronological performance.
The minimalist stage is reflective of Carson’s minimalist life, and the sounds of bird song in the background serve as a constant reminder of the natural wonder of our environment.
The show is currently running at the Tabard theatre in Chiswick – which is small and intimate creating the perfect space for Carson’s story to unfold – before touring Bristol and beyond and then returning to London at The Warehouse in Croydon.
