Simply Fish, Shoreditch

The Boxpark in Shoreditch has many eateries in the different container spaces. Simply Fish’s East London branch (there is another in Camden) is situated on the first level of the Boxpark and the door needs a firm pull but don’t let that deter you! Inside you find a nicely kitted-out restaurant, wooden floor and proper tables, capable of comfortably serving 54 diners.

Simply Fish serves sustainable fish and only works with MSC Certified British fisheries. They offer an a la carte menu with starters from £6, and their mains vary from £9 to £14.50. They also offer you the option to choose your fish the way you like it prepared (baked, steamed, battered, matzo, tempura), a choice of sauce and two sides: a personalised meal for just £12.75.

My starter was the chilli salt squid with soya and coconut sauce, the squid lovely and tender. The batter needed the sauce but the fresh chillies gave it a nice kick. For her main, my companion tried the Jerk seabass. It was beautifully pan-fried and served with pineapple salsa, steamed rice and sweet potato wedges. The fresh pineapple salsa nicely complemented the spiciness of this dish.

I tried the personalised fish option, helpfully guided by the enthusiastic and friendly staff. Pan-fried trout with the soy ginger and oyster sauce, steamed jasmine rice and pak choi on the side – a safe option but why change a winning combination?

With eight different fish options – including king prawns, six preparation options, eight sauces and eleven accompaniments – the different options are endless (well, not completely endless but you would need someone with better maths in order to work out exact numbers.) As fish likes to swim, I can recommend a lovely cold Gavi to accompany your meal.

After much deliberation over apple crumble, deconstructed passionfruit cheesecake (apparently mousse with shortbread on the side) and hot chocolate fondant, we opted for the third option. It was a little too sweet for my liking, more milk chocolate than dark, and perhaps another kind of ice cream other than chocolate would have balanced the dessert more. However, my chocolate-fan companion had no objections to the above.

Simply Fish in Shoreditch is a good option to dine in or order a delivery: they even have two meat dishes and a vegetarian option to keep the whole family happy. It is worth mentioning that the unisex toilets are shared with the rest of the Boxpark below, should you wish to visit, yet when it comes to Boxpark restaurants, you will dine well and relaxed at Simply Fish.
