New Year’s Eve Round-up
Normally a New Year’s Eve rounding up of all the special events taking place to celebrate the changing of the year takes on a cynical tone. It’s a piece aimed at navigating your way through the plethora of cheap cash-ins and the ways in which to avoid being charged a tenner just to get into your local. However, this year is very different. The huge number of celebrity deaths, Brexit and the election of the Oompa Loompa’s pervy uncle to the position of most powerful man in the world means that it really is a time to celebrate the end of 2016 and the beginning of 2017. The London Word takes you through places that are well worth your time and money.
For those of you who are looking to combine good food and dancing, Quaglino’s in Mayfair offers a very charming experience. Their Great Gatsby themed party offers a three course dinner as well as musical entertainment provided by Belle Noir (pictured) with the best of jazz, soul, blues and swing. Music will also be on offer in the Mezzanine bar with acoustic trio The Fix providing the tunes until the early hours.
If you’re after something a little less decadent, head to Absurd Bird in Soho. They are offering a Southern style menu with a bottomless supply of Prosecco, starting with an artichoke dip with fried tortilla chips or jalapeño biscuits with apple butter, before moving on to chicken fried steak and eggs; grilled quarter chicken with gravy; or black bean burgers served with an abundance of fries. After filling up on food, the party moves to the basement where you can enjoy many a Moonshine cocktail.
For a retro feel, there is the newly opened branch of the Breakfast Club in Battersea. In a similar vein to its Shoreditch branch, there is a hidden speakeasy accessible through a kitsch launderette. They will be hosting a 70s themed party, featuring classic cocktails and lip-smackingly good cheese toasties.
For those looking to go back even further, there is a Blitz-themed party at the B1, Victoria House and a Prohibition party at the Bloomsbury Ballroom. But wherever you end up, have a wonderful year and many thanks from all us at the London Word for your support and feedback throughout the year. Roll on 2017!
