London Fashion Week: PPQ

PPQ was a raucous affair. Well, the queueing bit anyway. Or should I say, the seething mass of cocktail-fuelled, costume-attired attendees in the basement of the ME Hotel. Once we were in though, all was fine.

Sam Faiers (of TOWIE fame) was front row fodder enough for the paps who seemed thrilled with her bouncy, jumpsuited presence. As for the clothes, they were sweet and classic. The looks felt familiar throughout and as the show neared its end I realised my reference – Luella Bartley.

It all had that school uniform, Victoriana, British quirk about it. Think giant heart appliqued on to the front of a bouncy, mini party dress, neat Peter Pan collars, sweetheart necklines, sheer layers and bows galore. It all had a slight DIY feel to it that I enjoyed – a little bit like a sleeve had been slashed off last minute, a neckline enhanced with a pair of shearing scissors or a cleverly twisted strap added to the mix– definitely not the case, but a suggestion of it.

A hint of Sandy (as in Grease) peeped through with a velvet all in one – complete with scoop neck, scoop back and fluffy lined stilettos. It seems the Fifties will be making an appearance alongside the Seventies references we’re seeing all over the shop (for a prime example of the latter decade, see Jasper Conran).

The footwear was – in one word – tasselled. Both cut out, peep toe heels and knee high boots alike were adorned with tassels. Fur also made an appearance in the shape of a ¾ length sleeved boxy coat – plus, it featured majorly on the standout pieces: the coats. For me, these were favourites. Gorgeous, full-skirted, fur collared and (in one case) be-hooded coats. Beautiful.

And one more thing – it was all black. Yes, a splash of white in a high neck blouse or pussy bow neck tie but other than that? Black. Nothing wrong with that in my book.

London Fashion Week AW15 runs from Friday 20 to Tuesday 24 February. Stay tuned for more reports…
