Alternative New Year’s Eve Destinations

It is the celebration that no one looks forward to. It’s a tenner just to get into a crowded pub to be subjected to Jules Holland’s Hootenanny being played over the PA. It’s impossible to hear any of what your friends are saying over the din, and you’re expected to risk a pair of dislocated shoulders thanks to an overenthusiastic rendition of Auld Lang Syne. Although it is the traditional time of year to say ‘Bah humbug!’, I think Scrooge got it a week too late. But there are ways of avoiding feelings of claustrophobia, being outrageously fleeced and overwhelmingly underwhelmed when the clock strikes 00:01.

If you’re looking for something a little more sophisticated than fighting to get served at your local, head on down to the Jazz Café in Camden. It is a venue that is coming to celebrating a quarter of a century of hosting world famous musicians from around the world. This New Year’s Eve Introducing Live will be recreating Daft Punk’s seminal 2013 album Discovery. On top of this will be The Correspondents who seamlessly blend genres. It promises to be an exhilarating night of music.

For something south of the river, there is an actual brewery hosting the proverbial piss up. The Meantime Brewing will be taking it back to the 1920s with their Prohibition-themed bash. The dress code is flappers and cads with DJs and dancing taking through into the New Year. Just don’t tell them who told you.

More sophisticated and less raucous fare is happening at the Jugged Hare. A fine purveyor of game, the restaurant is offering a five-course tasting menu with matching wines. With dishes ranging from wild Suffolk roe deer carpaccio to Yorkshire mallard, this may be the perfect time to take things down a notch and make this a New Year’s that you will actually remember!

Wherever you spend New Year’s Eve, we here at The London Word hope that it’s a fun one. Thanks for reading and we look forward to providing you with entertaining and informative pieces throughout 2015!
