Discreetly tucked away in a cobblestoned corner of Covent Garden is an oasis of calm that will instantly transport you from the West End to the Far East. Thai Square Spa is a world away from the urban bustle that echoes outside; a tranquil garden entrance invites guests to leave their tensions at the door and step from London’s chaotic streets into the peaceful paradise within.
Set over two floors and splashed with rich golds and browns, the décor is on the right side of ornate without being overly lavish. An aromatic grand entrance – featuring solid wood panelling and large brass bells on the walls – wafts of sensuous citrus tones as the gentle lilt of harp strings carries you to a calmer place.
While I wait, I am offered a choice of complimentary exotic teas by a genial Thai staff member, dressed in the customary black suit. The menu provided includes roselle, ginger, pandan, safflower and jasmine teas, and lists their healing properties. The signature brew – Thai bael fruit tea – has a distinct smoky aroma, is calming, cleansing and traditionally used for healing internal wounds.
After completing the obligatory consent form, a tour of the spa’s facilities by Marketing Manager Sara Lee reveals 12 treatment rooms, two steam rooms, plenty of golden Buddhas and an inviting spa area downstairs where imported Thai bricks shape the jagged, earth-coloured walls.
‘We have a VIP room,’ Lee says. ‘And we have a lot of hen parties. We don’t have a special hen booking party price but we can design a package to suit their needs, and we can give them special discounts.’
I am introduced to Tukta, my therapist for the day, who hands me a bathrobe and slippers which I swiftly change into. The candlelit treatment room is cream coloured with exposed brick on one wall, a single bed in the centre and wood features throughout. I am here for the Thai Square Signature Scrub: 45 minutes of unadulterated bliss that begins with a tea salt foot bath with fig soap and honey.
Tukta exfoliates my entire body top to toe, massaging it gently, incorporating a selection of Thai herbal ingredients to improve the circulation and leave the skin refreshed and glowing, before moisturising with ylang-ylang and lemongrass cream. I feel invigorated and my skin is soft and smooth.
Whether you’re organising a group outing or need some meditative personal pampering, come to Thai Square Spa for sheer self-indulgence. There are no saunas or hydrotherapy areas here, but the treatments and therapies are blissful. Prices are varied – hand and foot treatments start at £42, up to £240 for a two-and-a-half hour ‘Royal Treatment’. The perfect Christmas gift for that special someone.
