A few months ago, I gave you a glimpse of odd-ball fashion collaborations for the first half of 2012. The second half of the year continues the trend of couture houses wooing and snaring high street brands, and launching ready-to-wear collections that you – I mean you, the reader – can kind of just about afford now that the second recession is over (or so we’re told. I can’t actually tell the difference…). Here are some highlights.
Maison Martin Margiela ♥ H&M
Here’s one fashion pairing we didn’t see coming. High street brand H&M is generally pretty straight. Standard issue flirty frocks, sequinned crop-tops, your odd lace-trimmed cardigan, essential knee socks for the season – so on and so forth. It is safe to say that deconstruction doesn’t figure high on their list of priorities. Enter Martin Margiela with his over-sized, drapey, cross-eyed crazy wear and H&M doesn’t look quite so cosily predictable. Bringing a sharp dose of wabi sabi in his wake, this Belgian designer creates in the tradition of the Japanese avant-garde, like Rei Kawakubo and Yohji Yamamoto. The line includes a black skirt with more skewed angles than a David Lynch film, high-waist baggy trousers that look ready to flop down to your ankles if you blink, and a beige top with a black bikini worn on the outside. The collection hits stores on Thursday 15 November.
Kim Kardashian ♥ Dorothy Perkins
Kim Kardashian was in London this weekend to launch her clothing line with high street brand Dorothy Perkins. This led to the tabloids screaming headlines like ‘Kardashian Khaos at Shopping Centre’ and ‘Kardashin Kollection at Westfields” and ‘Khloe, Kim and Kourtney Kardashian go Kissy-Kissy with X-Factor Kontestents.’ Okay, I made up that last one… Thousands of fans camped outside the shopping centre for hours before the launch, and the first five hundred were given wristbands so they could step inside and keep up with the Kardashians (see what I did there?) If this was Wimbledon, they would have had to name the Westfields foyer Kardashian Kliff.
MIA ♥ Versace
Rumour has it that west London girl MIA – aka Maya Arulpragasam – maybe has possible folders on her desktop that could perhaps indicate a potential collaboration with Versace. Yup. We’re almost most probably half sure. MIA’s music is often a no-holds-barred mix of alternative, dance, hip hop, world and electronica. She is also a painter, director and philanthropist. So, if this collaboration with Versace goes through, then you can add fashionista to the melting pot. MIA has done fashion before. She says that she is inspired by guerrilla art. Her clothes often feature bright colours with anarchist symbols and an earthy texture. Her mother is a seamstress, based in London. MIA once ran a limited edition clothing line called Okley Run. And she has modelled for Marc by Marc Jacobs in SS 2008. So, you could say that a mating with Versace could just be the next step.
Let’s wait and see what couplings 2013 brings…
