Grand Marnier’s Pop-Up Bar, Brixton

As I was sat, somewhat awkwardly, inside the giant inflatable ‘VIP Bubble’ with a photographer snapping away at the five of us through the plastic walls, I couldn’t help feeling like part of a Big Brother type social experiment.

The giant bubble was one of the features of the launch night for the Grand Marnier Bubble Bar, which is open for the month of September and can be found on the rooftop of The Prince in Brixton. Serving Grand Marnier drinks in little red bubble glasses and with beautiful sunset views from the roof, the pop-up bar celebrates a reinvention of the classic Parisian brand and the launch of their new ‘Sunset Hour ‘long drinks. The Grand Ginger (a ginger ale and lime mix) and the Grand Esprit (elderflower and soda water with orange and strawberry garnishes) were both refreshing revamps of the 185-year-old liqueur, which is a blend of Cognac and a rare Caribbean green orange. As I noted to my friend, it is not normally a liqueur I would ever actively seek out, so creating long drinks around Grand Marnier should certainly help to make it more accessible.

The evening was blessed with gorgeous weather and a perfect sunset, pulling together the sunset theme for the event and the cocktails. After the sun had set (whoever guesses the sundown time correctly wins a bottle of Grand Marnier) and the drinks had started to flow, the entertainment began in the shape of a lovely hula-hooping girl and Samsam, a record-breaking Bubbleologist. Having no clue as to what a Bubbleologist was, I soon found that blowing bubbles is not just for kids – Sam’s record is about 300 bubbles in one blow (I later challenged him and found that my PB is apparently a rather disappointing ten). His performance included bubbles of huge proportions (another of his records); ensnaring volunteers inside bubbles; blowing smoke inside bubbles; making bubbles within bubbles and many more bubble-related tricks. Samsam will be performing at the Bubble Bar on selected evenings, alongside other forms of entertainment throughout the month.

As September is meant to be our Indian Summer, the Grand Marnier rooftop bar will be a perfect setting for after work drinks or an afternoon in the sunshine and for making the most of the last few warm days of the year.
