How to Do Sporty Subtly

With Olympics mania now over, it’s hard to ignore the influence sportswear has had on fashion. With everyone from Celine to Kanye West offering their own take on athlete-worthy fashion, you’d be hard pressed to escape the need to grab a sartorial gold.

But what happens if you’re not a fan of the sporty look?

Fear not! As a self-confessed lover of anything girly (Louis Vuitton’s frothy lace concoctions? To die for), I shudder at the sight of a nylon vest. However, with a few clever little tricks, the sportswear trend can be acknowledged – without looking like you’re about to hit the Velodrome with Victoria Pendleton.

First off, work the look into your silhouette. Not all sporty looks need to be clingy; those who are die-hard followers of minimalism can adopt a directional, sporty aesthetic by choosing simple structures in block colours. On the high street, COS is your go-to for clean, structured lines. Adding a pop of colour with a marine blue jacket can add a patriotic spin to an outfit; similarly, a basic white T in a viscose-mix fabric will win you serious points in the fashion stakes.

Still not convinced?

Don’t fret! The sporty look can be subtly integrated into your outfit quicker than you can say ‘hop, skip and jump’. American Apparel offers a great selection of accessories to add an Olympics twist to any look. The unisex striped socks (available in a variety of lengths) are a super-subtle way of updating an otherwise girly ensemble. Try wearing the knee-high length with a flippy skirt and your trusted Converse. Or team its disco shorts (the black pair isn’t too dissimilar to a surprisingly forgiving pair of leather shorts) with opaque tights, brogues and a simple vest.

Tapping into the trend for all things Olympics doesn’t have to stop at clothing, either. If you’re still feeling weary of the sports aesthetic, try dipping a (perfectly polished) toe in with make-up. Choose your colours wisely, and you can support your team without donning the national flag. Lips are the perfect starting point. A slick of bright, matte lipstick paired with dewy skin and neutral eyes can give a subtle nod to sport. Nails can also be adorned with a sports-inspired palette. Keep them short and neat, first painting the base nude, and then adding a flash of your chosen colour on the very tips.

Whether you’re going to be glued to your television screen, or hiding behind your SATC box set, be sure to look fashionable. Subtly, of course.
