These Boots are Made for Walking
There’s no doubt about it, unhappy feet can ruin an experience. Whether you’re puddle hopping in a festival, dancing until the early hours or doing some serious sightseeing, the right footwear is essential.
Luckily for style conscious outdoorsy types, practical gear has been a fashion staple for a while now. Londoners scuttle 10 metres from the office to Starbucks in Barbour jackets, Hunter wellies and arctic-standard knitwear.
But these trends don’t cover every scenario. Just look at the commuters who think it’s OK to pair gym trainers with shift dresses or skirts. Not a good look.
The battle of the blisters continues in summer; when ugly ‘body toning’ sneakers weasel their way into wardrobes and pretty heels rub sweaty feet. I’m more of an emergency-flip-flops-in-a-tote-bag person myself.
This week, I decided to go against all natural urges and sport a pair of new hiking boots in a bid to break them in. Had I been a tourist, I certainly would have looked the part, but going about my daily routine was a bit weird.
On the first day, I was pretty embarrassed about my ugly shoes. I was careful to hide them under tables in meetings and keep them tucked away under benches and desks. Until later on, when I was late for the train.
Hearing my destination on the tannoy, I sped along the concourse with confidence. The shoes had perfect grip, plenty of support, and felt great. I zoomed past all the kitten heels, courts and stilettos and sashayed into the carriage with seconds to spare. These boots mean business.
They’re really waterproof too, and fit so well they probably didn’t need breaking in at all. I’ve worn this brand before and they’re pretty tough, and the top part of these particular boots manages to be both breathable and cosy.
I’ve spent a few days wearing some odd ensembles, but now I’m safe in the knowledge that my boots will go the distance. I can’t wait to slip into the sexy beasts for the Inca Trail – more on that next week.

Next week: Now booking – The Inca Trail…
Never be ashamed of your hiking boots, Cath! I only wish I had the courage to wear my well-travelled boots round about town instead of allowing them to lie unloved and forgotten in the depths of my wardrobe as our fond memories of tramping the Inca Trail fade into the distance until the rural urge takes me once again…
