Fall in Love With Edinburgh
Rolling into Edinburgh on the train feels like the opening credits of a film. With dramatic mountains, towering spires and genteel architecture, it’s the perfect backdrop to a romantic weekend away.
It may have more airs and graces than many other parts of the country, but the city is still unmistakably Scottish. When we arrive there’s even a bagpipe player to greet us. It feels like a world away from the dizzy whirl of London.
In fact, Londoners should head north soon, before the cold gets too much for their southern disposition. It’s lovely during the Christmas season, and the festival-goers are long gone. It’s also great for New Year’s Eve, if a little pricey.
Start your story at The Elephant House, an award-winning coffee shop that’s helped fuel the creativity of many writers, including JK Rowling, Ian Rankin and Alexander McCall-Smith.
Next, head to the Grass Market, which is bustling with independent stalls and retailers selling all sorts of souvenirs and gifts. Wander the cobbled streets and enjoy historic old town.
Warm up in a cosy pub like the Halfway House. This CAMRA award-winning pub does snacks and light meals including haggis, neeps and tatties.
No trip to Edinburgh would be complete without a walk up to the castle. Wrap up warm and take a hike. It’s worth it for the views alone but Edinburgh Castle itself is absolutely stunning.
Edinburgh’s a big foodie city, so there’s a lot to choose from, dinner-wise. But if you’re keen to impress, book a table at The Tower Restaurant. On top of the Museum of Scotland, it boasts amazing views of the city and is listed by the Michelin Guide. The food is innovative, contemporary and of course very Scottish. Try the venison Wellington sloshed down with a something from the intimidatingly long wine list. Then walk it all off in the crisp night air.
