Beauty at Bordello Boutique

Leave your hair ties and panama hats at home, it’s time for a crash course in how to be a lady. A beautiful-vintage-Hollywood-bombshell-type lady to be exact.

Professional hair and make-up artists Amanda and Natasha aka the Lipstick & Curls Girls say they can teach anyone how to preen herself for a 1940s or ’50s big-screen close-up.

On a mission to teach golden age glamour to women across London, the girls are keen to show that with a bit of time and patience, anyone can achieve pompadour curls, perfectly flicked eyeliner and a sexy pout.

Their latest audience comprises of women of all ages and backgrounds, sharing a love of vintage (cue wicker handbags, full skirts and nautical stripes) and an ambition to perfect their look from the neck up.

‘I can never get my curls to stay,’ says Becky, a charity worker who is also hoping the girls are available for her wedding next year, ‘I can’t wait to learn some new tricks!’

And tricks they surely have. With a glittering career of primping, plucking and plumping up celebrity faces and hair, these girls know their stuff. ‘It’s really just about having fun and experimenting,’ explains Lipstick & Curls Girl Amanda, who is sporting some perfect pin curls on arrival.

Their captive audience is assembled in the East End’s finest lingerie boutique, Bordello. The intimate little treasure trove seems the perfect place to share beauty secrets.

Surrounded by heart-stopping corsets, luxurious negligees and an array of cheeky nipple tassels, the girls take us through the curling, fastening and hair spraying rituals that are sure to get the right look. With understanding and careful explanations, they also add in some honest feedback on the lotions and potions currently on the market.

When the hair is done, we move onto make-up. Going for a classic, dewy, youthful glow that would look amazing on pretty much everyone, we are shown how to bring out the blushing, doe-eyed vixen within. Everyone is amazed with the effect – and how easy they made it seem.

The champagne has been flowing throughout and everyone is getting along swimmingly. Swapping stories and tips, an array of precious wares is bought from the fancy boudoir to complete our new looks. And full of newfound confidence and ambition, we head home on the double – our heated rollers await.
